About Us

The idea of SMARTPOL has emerged with the aim of producing technological solutions for marine pollution detection while establishing data services which will be able to integrate with existing EU services in synergy with the European Green Deal.

SMARTPOL aims to present a novel and compact pollution detection, monitoring and analysis system architecture in order to monitor marine
fields and to detect different types of marine pollution consisting of hardware and software components.

In sum, integration of different types of sensors (e.g. remote sensing, UAV and USV integrated IoT), development of marine pollution detection algorithm using sensor data and the state-of-the-art intelligent system technologies including AI-based image processing, autonomous navigation and smart communication system will be presented as R&I objectives of the project.

Interactive Software (ISW) is responsible for defining the technical aspects involved in the collection of pollution data at the USV level and their transmission to the command and coordination center level. Within the command and coordination center, ISW delivers a USV monitoring and remote control application.

The activities undertaken by ISW targeted the aspects assumed by the project, respectively, starting from the concrete aspects that currently govern pollution monitoring operations in marine areas. From the very wide spectrum of actions specific to pollution monitoring, the SMARTPOL team will focus on a quick procedure involving steps in the prevention regime, real-time data collection and post-processing of collected data.

Procedurally, the detection will be largely achieved through the analysis of satellite images – images and satellite and AIS (Automated Identification Systems) data from maritime vessels. In the case of the detection of potential areas of contamination with pollutants, the drone from the project will be used to confirm the situations, which will contain pollution measurement capabilities at the level of the vessel.

From the initial analysis regarding the functional block diagram of the SMARTPOL system, ISW investigated the elements for which it is directly responsible, namely the data acquisition components, data transmission and their integration into the architectural component for the pilot system. As part of the project, ISW also delivers the command and control component of the USV system.

The IoT module related to the USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicle)/drone platform’s pollution detection capability, a set of hardware and software equipment for sensor integration, data acquisition and their transmission through the communications module to the command center will be a standardized module that it will be able to be applied in the case of pilot sites when tests will be carried out to validate the concepts of performance, efficiency in pollution detection, respectively in the sites in Turkey, Malta and South Africa.

The IoT module will incorporate standardized and uniform mechanisms for the identified use cases, but also for similar situations regarding pollution monitoring, both from the hardware and software design perspective, by applying open data structures, that could be integrated and supported by open technologies for retrieval, their processing and processing, including API functions and software libraries.

Following the purchases made, a demonstrative and representative setup for the SmartPol solution was reproduced in the ISW laboratory. The equipment purchased are standard, affordable products that can also be purchased by partners to complete their own USV platform solution. Also, the Lora communication infrastructure can be integrated with other

platforms, mobile or static, that other partners in the project will want to use. The C2 application will be able to be used “as is” by any partner that has USV and Lora communication infrastructure.

AquaBioTech Group (ABT) is an independent aquaculture, fisheries, biotechnology and environmental testing/research, engineering, consulting, development, and training company with its own dedicated research and marine survey facilities. ABT operates globally, specializing in three main areas:
a) aquaculture and fisheries consultancy from resource management and market research to policy development and feasibility, due diligence studies;
b) contracted aquaculture research for feed development, pharmaceutical testing and breeding programmes;
c) design and commissioning of land based and marine aquaculture production systems and technologies.
ABT is currently involved in eleven national and European projects in diverse marine and aquatic disciplines. ABT Marine™ runs its own survey vessels and infrastructure, provides a range of services including marine surveying, environmental impact assessment and mapping/GIS. The team includes marine biologists, scientific divers, oceanographers, and remote sensing experts who can conduct bathymetric, side-scan sonar, benthic surveys, ecological risk assessments, marine species identification, sampling, laboratory analysis, ground-truthing, site inspections using remote sensing, SCUBA diving, and underwater video techniques.
